Maryse Wright

Maryse Wright

Présidente

I joined Nottingham Anglo-French Society (NAFS) in 2009, and I have been Présidente since 2015. As a French native speaker having lived in England and having worked here as a teacher of French since 1981, I have loved being part of NAFS all these years! For me, the two main attractions of being a member of NAFS are the talks and the opportunities to meet people from many different walks of life. The talks are great because of the variety of topics covered and because of the way in which they are covered. I learn a lot from them, and I usually go away having gained a fresh perception of things which were part of my upbringing, but which I never had time to think about during a busy life! I find it very uplifting to meet people who have a wide range of experiences of French, but who all share a love of the language and culture and who feel motivated to attend regularly!

Annick

Annick

Secrétaire et Trésorière

Originally from Paris, I am retired after careers in France in international finance & forecasting, in medicine and in education. I also volunteered to offer literacy and educational support to disadvantaged children. Further afield, I worked for NGOs in Africa and Asia. More recently, in England, I’ve taught French to Businesspeople in international companies and to adults in colleges and university for long life learning. I was delighted to join the Committee of the French circle, NAFS, as a secretary and treasurer, assisted by Keerthi, and to put the skills I had acquired during my working life to good use. I enjoy working as a team member and my enthusiasm has led me to take on challenges, innovate and organise for example: -Cultural trips to France -Cinema events followed by discussion and quiz. Etc. I launched a monthly “info-zoom-scope” to allow Francophiles to access lectures from home throughout the country. I have also supported my husband Keerthi, to set up and transmit lectures in French on Zoom-hybride, locally and nationally.

Terry Edwards

Terry Edwards

Comité

My name is Terry Edwards and I have been a member of the committee since 2016. I joined this association when I moved to Nottingham about eight years ago. I lived in France for many years myself and I loved the many social differences that I found there. When we learn a new language, we also learn a lot about a new culture. There is always more than one way to see things. I think the NAFS helps us to see the world through different eyes. I also enjoy the regular Monday evening chats that we have at the Bell pub in Nottingham. I look forward to meeting you in the coming year.

Jon Marsden

Jon Marsden

Comité

A lifelong Francophile, Jon studied in England, France and Spain, and has used the French language in various jobs and to keep in touch with friends. He has been a campsite courier, an export sales officer with a commercial company, and a teacher of French in many situations. Having taught in community groups both in England and in France, as well as in Further Education colleges in the UK, he currently teaches evening classes at the University of Nottingham. His interests include art, film, communal living solutions, and playing and listening to music. “I fell in love with the French language when I was a teenager”, he says, ”and for many years it has been part of my everyday life. It is so rewarding to learn from the experts who speak at the Anglo-French society’s meetings, about so many different aspects of French and Francophone cultures, and it is always great to have a bit of a chat in French”
