Inspired by a fantastic exhibition entitled “C’est une chanson qui nous ressemble”, that took place at the Cité Internationale de la langue française in Villers-Cotterêts, in 2024, this well-illustrated PowerPoint presentation will focus on a dozen French songs. The selected songs have been very successful in various foreign countries since the beginning of the twentieth century, despite the dominance of the English language, and despite the rising popularity of Spanish. We will listen to samples of songs, and we will consider which images of France and the francophone world are conveyed through the themes addressed and through the singers.
