Welcome to the Nottingham Anglo-French Society’s vibrant programme of events, running from September to July. We offer a diverse range of activities celebrating the French language and Francophone cultures.
Our main programme offers talks and lectures on history, literature, and current affairs, film screenings, social gatherings, and opportunities to practise your French.
New this year! Our Fringe programme, launched in September 2025, offers activities that will appeal to the whole family.
All in all, there is something for everyone!
New members and visitors are always welcome to join us and experience the “entente cordiale” first hand. Explore our upcoming events below and discover the fascinating world of Anglo-French culture.
We welcome visitors at our events. The cost is £8 to attend. Visitors under 16 attend free if accompanied by an adult. If you would like to attend any of our events please contact us.

La soirée d’accueil de septembre 2025, la conférence du 17 octobre et la soirée de Noël de décembre 2025 auront lieu à St Mary’s Church Hall, Wollaton Hall Drive, Nottingham, NG8 1AF. La soirée d’accueil et la soirée de Noël seront en présentiel et elles commenceront à 19 heures 30.
La conférence du 14 novembre 2025 aura lieu à Café Sobar, 22 Friar Lane, Nottingham NG1 6DQ.
Les conférences seront offertes en présentiel et sur zoom. Elles commenceront à 19 heures 30.
L’AGM pour 2025-26 est programmée pour le mercredi 8 juillet 2026 sur zoom.
The soirée d’accueil (26th September 2025), the 17th October talk and the soirée de Noël (12th December 2025) will take place in St Mary’s Church Hall, Wollaton Hall Drive, Nottingham, NG8 1AF. The soirée d’accueil and the soirée de Noël will be in person and will start at 7.30pm.
The 14th November 2025 talk will take place at Café Sobar, 22 Friar Lane, Nottingham NG1 6DQ. Both talks will be offered in person and on zoom. They will start at 7:30 p.m.
The AGM for 2025-26 is scheduled for Wednesday July 8th, 2026 on zoom.

Thierry Viennois: “Grenoble-Dora…et retour”

(in person and Zoom) It’s bad enough when you watch war atrocities through a range of media. Such atrocities feel even more shocking and violent when they strike through the heart of your own family. In his endeavour to narrate the roundup that took place in Grenoble and the deportation of his uncle in 1943, Thierry Viennois had to investigate various places in his hometown as well as in Germany, where he visited one of the concentration camps. This plunged him back into the memories of what he had been told about this period, and he had to make a very inhuman story sound human. The speaker invites us to follow him through this journey without any intention of shocking or causing horror but to bring about a glimmer of hope that such events will never happen again.
(présentiel et zoom) Les horreurs de la guerre sont suffisamment vives à nos yeux quand nous les voyons à travers divers médias. Elles sont encore plus choquantes et violentes quand elles nous touchent directement au coeur de notre propre famille. La démarche que Thierry Viennois a entreprise, de relater l’expérience de la rafle à Grenoble et de la déportation de son oncle en 1943, l’a mené dans certains coins de sa ville natale ainsi qu’en Allemagne, pour visiter l’un de ses camps de concentration. Celle-ci l’a fait plonger au plus profond de ses souvenirs de ce qu’on lui avait raconté de cette période-là, pour rendre humaine une histoire aux allures inhumaines. Le conférencier vous invite à le suivre dans cette tranche de vie sans vouloir choquer ni horrifier mais pour en retirer un semblant d’espoir que de tels actes ne se reproduisent jamais plus.

Phil Drabble: “Errances avec une tigresse, Le Front Ouest”

“Errances avec une Tigresse: Le Front Ouest”
Inspiré par le livre de l’historien britannique Anthony Seldon, « Le Chemin de la Paix », dans lequel il relate sa marche solitaire le long du Front de l’Ouest, Phil Drabble a décidé d’entreprendre le même périple sur sa moto, une Triumph Tiger. En suivant cet itinéraire historique, il a traversé des paysages parmi les plus évocateurs et les plus beaux d’Europe, de la frontière suisse à l’Alsace, la Lorraine, la Champagne, la Somme et les Flandres, pour terminer son voyage en Belgique, sur la côte de la mer du Nord.
La conférence de Phil Drabble est un hommage à tous ceux qui, de tous bords, ont combattu et sont morts sur le Front de l’Ouest, et focalise en particulier sur le sort de deux hommes originaires de sa ville natale, Nottingham.

“Wanderings with a Tigress, The Western Front Way”
Inspired by British historian Anthony Seldon’s book, “The Path Of Peace”, in which he chronicled his solitary walk along the Western Front, Phil Drabble decided to undertake the same journey on his motorcycle, a Triumph Tiger. Following this historic route, he crossed some of the most evocative and beautiful landscapes in Europe, from the Swiss border to Alsace, Lorraine, Champagne, the Somme and Flanders, ending his journey in Belgium, on the North Sea Coast.
Phil Drabble’s lecture is a tribute to all those who, on all sides, fought and died on the Western Front, and focuses in particular on the plight of two men from his hometown of Nottingham.

Nottingham and surrounding areas French Conversation Groups
The Nottingham French Conversation Group meets on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. at The Bell Inn, 18 Angel Row, NG1 6HL. All levels are welcome from beginners to advanced, including native French speakers. They also organise hikes during which one can chat in French. Southwell Café Conversations: This is a very well established and convivial group which meets on Wednesday mornings between 10.00 and 12.00 at Southwell Garden Centre, Fiskerton Road. Southwell NG25 0TH.The group welcomes new members. Currently they have around 35 in the group – mostly retired people who like to talk French. Expertise in French varies from a native speaker, people who are fluent to those who have a very rusty O level or are just learning ! No-one is too embarrassed to be corrected. There is no committee, no fees, no register – you come when you can. There is no structure, no homework. It a great social, French speaking group. Just turn up! Le Rosbif French Conversation Group – Vale of Belvoir is a long running informal French conversation group which meets alternatively in person and on line. Based in and around the Bingham area, face to face meetings are held in local pubs in Radcliffe on Trent, Bingham and Bottesford. The group currently has 19 members. At some of the meetings an activity is introduced to encourage discussion but for which no preparation is necessary. There is no homework either! People with differing levels of French are very welcome. The group meets in the evening on alternate Thursdays.
